Knockout champions at the double

MIDDLETON can boast two junior Thai Boxing champions this week.
Lewis Marsh and John Dennis, both from Boarshaw, currently hold the British Muay Tia championships in their respective divisions.
Lewis, aged 11, of Stanycliffe Lane, beat Adam Beesley of Oldham to win the trophy in his first title fight on Saturday. The match, only Lewis' tenth, is the result of years of training. He first took up the sport at the age of three.
Although the junior ranks use a points system, Lewis wore down his opponent until the referee decided he couldn't continue and awarded the bout to the Cardinal LangleyRC High School pupil.
Lewis' best friend, 13-year old John, of Acresfield Road, is proud holder of the 42kg championship title after beating Thomas Middleton of the Ruk Thai camp. John had previously held the 39kg title and has been in some 40 Muay Tia contests.
John and Lewis trained under the watchful eye of Peter Feeler, himself a former British champion at the sport. Peter runs the Spartan team at Lodge Leisure gym, Townley Street. Peter has also trained Chris McDonald, a former world number two, and British silver and bronze medallist. Both boys will now be allowed to relax and enjoy their titles before their defence bouts are arranged in April.
