Harriers shine in S-Portugal!
27/11/2008
A GROUP of 10 runners and supporters from Middleton Harriers recently travelled to Portugal to take part in the Algarve Running Challenge.
The challenge consisted of four sections - an 8km cross-country, one-mile track event, 6.5km beach race and 10-mile road race.
The weather was great for the spectators but a bit hot for the runners.
The road race started over the border in Ayamonte, Spain, and the route took runners over the Guadiana International Bridge, back into Portugal, to finish in Vila Real De Santo Antonio.
More than 500 runners took part in this very well organised race, including international athletes.
Middleton Runners did very well in the challenge.
Graham Chesters finished second overall in a time of 2 hours 8 mins. Steve Vasiliou was fourth in a time of 2 hours 22 mins.
Middleton also won the men’s first team prize, the team being Graham Chesters, Steve Vasiliou and John Brooks.
Kyrinda Hurst Moore won the first ladies’ prize by finishing in 2 hours 43 mins. She beat her nearest rival by five minutes.
Teresa Hollins also ran well to pick up the first lady veteran 50 prize.
