THE Middleton Men’s Thursday Darts League season opens tonight, with 14 teams embarking on the long winter campaign.
Champions Grove Inn (Blackley) are favourites to take the title again. They start with a home match against Middleton Junction.
Woodside WMC, who chased Grove for the whole of last season, entertain Gardeners (Grimshaw Lane), while Middleton Con Club, third in the table last time round, visit the Friendship.
The Middleton Ladies League starts on Monday, with nine teams competing in division one and ten in division two.
Reigning champions Friendship play host to Nook in their first fixture, while last season’s runners-up Hare and Hounds go to Oddfellows.
Middleton hot-shot Joe Heywood beat Rochdale-based Clwyd county ace Steve Cookson in the quarter-finals of the Springbank Bowling Club knockout, but he was then beaten by Shaw's John Moreton who went on to win the event.
Heywood picked up a special award for the 167 checkout which he had achieved in qualifying for the finals a few weeks ago.
