SWIMMER Keri-Anne Payne described winning an Olympic silver medal as ‘amazing’.
The former Cardinal Langley student, 20, was second in the gruelling 10km open water race behind the unbeaten world champion Larisa Ilchenko in Beijing - missing out on gold by just 1.5 seconds.
The race in the Olympic rowing lake was only settled in a dramatic final few metres with Russian Ilchenko just touching out Payne after almost two hours in the water.
Payne's Stockport Metro club-mate Cassie Patten was third after the two Britons had led for most of the race.
The Heywood girl said: "To get a medal is amazing. We didn’t have a tactic, we just went out and swam. I don’t think she [Ilchenko] expected us to be as close as we were – I was right with her at the end.
"The course was really flat and one of the best I’ve ever swum."
Payne said she was absolutely ‘overwhelmed’ to have bagged a silver medal for Team GB.
She added: "I still feel in complete shock. It was such a surprise and although the race went exceptionally well, I can’t believe I’m coming back to Heywood with a silver medal around my neck."
