DARTS: RHODES hot-shot Mark Holden played one of the best matches of his life when he beat 13-times world champion Phil Taylor in an exhibition at the VASA Club in Blackley.
The best of three encounter went to the decider, and with Taylor already having had a shot at double top, Holden needed 170.
He struck successive treble 20s and hit the bull for a magnificent victory.
Holden hit a 180 in taking the opening leg in 13 darts, but The Power won the second leg with something in hand.
Holden, who recently beat top Scottish player Jamie Harvey, also in an exhibition, was delighted.
He said: "It was a great feeling to beat Phil who is the greatest darts player ever. It was the icing on the cake for me after a great season."
Others from Middleton who acquitted themselves well were Dave Lowe and Neil Turvin who was the victim of a 15-dart leg of 701 from Taylor, rounded off by a 170 finish.
June Dawber, from the Carters Arms, won the Middleton Ladies League division two individual title on Monday night. She beat Margaret Crompton (Woodside WMC) 3-1 in the final.
The season ends next Monday with the Memoriam Trophy and a play-off for the division two runners-up spot between Middleton Con Club and Carters.
