Late penalty is costly for Villa

10/ 4/2008

A LATE penalty cost Cardinal Villa two vital points in their battle to avoid relegation from the Middleton Sunday League’s Premier Division.

With only five minutes to go at Bowlee, in the day’s only Premier Division fixture, they were leading Radclyffe 3-2 thanks to goals from Arron Simpson, Danny Walsh and William Mayoh.

But it was not to be, as Carl Brogden slotted home from the penalty spot with virtually the last kick of the game. Des Lyons and James Nutt had scored Radclyffe’s other goals.

In the only other league fixture played on Sunday there was plenty to celebrate for Middleton Boys as they recorded their first win of the season at the 11th attempt.

Premier Autobodies were despatched 5-3 at Bowlee, with Hurst hitting four of their goals and Owen completing a good morning’s work in Division Two.

The HPS Challenge Cup second round ties largely went to form, the only giant-killing act coming at Parkfield where runaway Division Two leaders Inter Alliance beat Division One bottom club Old Cock 7-3.

McDonald, Nield and Jules shared the goals for Inter.

Alliance also hit the goals trail as they put nine unanswered strikes past Old David.

John Coogan led the way with four. Dave Matthews bagged a brace, and there were also goals from Steve Hall, James Hampson and Bell.

St Clare’s, with only one win in Division One this season, put up a good show against Blackley Alliance, but in the end the Premier side had the firepower for a 6-2 win.

Dawson (2), Carter (2) Dean and Thomas got their goals, while Brooks grabbed both for Saints.

Houghton, Eaton, Morrison and Pearson were on target for Kestral as they beat Our Lady’s in the Subsidiary Cup Group A. Booth netted twice for the visitors.

Scorers for St Clares v Blackley Alliance were Brooks and Hadden, not Brooks (2).
