School team makes rugby history

20/ 3/2008

A TEAM from Cardinal Langley Sports College took home the spoils from the inaugural Rochdale Hornets’ Schools Sevens played at Hopwood Hall.

The lads got off to a tough start by having to play their first two group games back-to-back. But they overcame St Annes Academy and Siddal Moor without conceding a point.

In the other group, Springhill and St Cuthbert's got off to flying starts by overcoming strong Matthew Moss High School and Wardle outfits.

Springhill and Cuthbert’s then went head to head, with Cuthbert’s winning a tight affair.

St Cuthbert’s appeared to have the upper hand in the final, with good field position in the early stages, but the Cardinal Langley defence held firm and it was deadlocked at the break.

The second half brought the points, and Cardinal Langley ran out 10-4 winners.

Rochdale Hornets community development manager Matt Gartland was on hand to oversee the afternoon.

He said: "To concede only two tries in an afternoon of seven-a-side rugby, as the winners did, is an outstanding achievement by any team." (s)
