Trophy holder crashes out

13/ 8/2008

CLIVE Turner, holder of the Rochdale Observer Golf Tournament Trophy, is out of this year’s contest.

The Bacup player travelled to take on Blackley’s Keith Liddle hoping to take another step towards the finals which will be played at Blackley on Saturday 13 September.

But he took an almighty 7 and 6 beating after giving away eight shots.

Also out is former Rose Bowl winner Lee Rogers (Rochdale) who travelled to Springfield Park and went down 5 and 4 to Peter Owens.

Much, much closer was the all Springfield Park tie between Tariq Mahmood and Paul Whitehead.

It was settled in favour of Whitehead at the 20th.

Peter Lane, pictured, a finalist last year, is still on the road. Lane (Blackley) overcame past finals’ day contestant Mark Barry (Tunshill) 3 and 2.

Young Robert Wood won his first ever match in the tournament, but he bowed out in his next game when he lost 6 and 4 to Manchester’s Gregory Jones.

Results received from round four are:

Peter Owens (Springfield) beat Lee Rogers (Rochdale) 5 and 4; Tariq Mahmood (Springfield) lost at 20th to Paul Whitehead (Springfield); Craig Mellor (Rossendale) lost 2 and 1 to Mark Hughes (Blackley); Graham Buckley (Tunshill) beat PJ Sutherland (Lobden) 3 and 2; Peter Caine (Springfield) beat Drew Roberts (North Manchester) 3 and 2; David Stafford (Todmorden) lost 2 and 1 to AN White (Blackley); K Liddle (Blackley) beat Clive Turner (Bacup) 7 and 6; P Skinner (Blackley) beat Nick Simpson (Castle Hawk) 1up; Barry Diamond (Tunshill) beat James Turner (Rochdale) 1 up; Brian Kynaston (North Manchester) beat N Bowers (Blackley) 5 and 4; Gregory P Jones (Manchester) beat Robert Wood (Castle Hawk) 6 and 4; Peter Lane (Blackley) beat Mark Barry (Tunshill) 3 and 2; Andrew Jackson (Lobden) lost to Craig Hardman (Lobden); Steve Hyde (Blackley) beat S McCondichie (Pike Fold) 2 and 1.

Due to bad weather and delays, two matches were being played this week.

Once those games have been decided the contest will be down to the last 16 and a double draw.

Games in both of the next two rounds must be played by Thursday 11 September and all results submitted by that date to enable the draw for the semi-finals to be made.

The draw for round five is:

  • GAME TWO: 24 Barry Diamond (Tunshill) v 106 Peter Owens (Springfield).
