Leicester 1 Stockport 0

12/ 8/2008

COUNTY fell at the first hurdle of the Carling Cup and have also lost big front-man Matty McNeil for Saturday's Edgeley Park League clash with Leicester.

And with midfielder Paul Turnbull forced to limp off with what seemed to be a knee injury, it seemed to be an expensive night for Jim Gannon's men.

Even allowing for the early sending off, it is clear to me already this season that County will struggle for goals. Whilst the defence and midfield are demonstrating more than enough skill and grit to ensure survival in league 1, goal-scoring is a different matter. Thompson is a potential gem but needs time to develop. Rowe (perhaps not surprisingly) suddenly doesn't look dangerous at all. Ironically it is McNeil (a player I have never had any time for) who offers a glimmer of hope. In the second half against Huddersfield, his ability to flick on headers and hold the ball up suggested that he may be able to catalyze more openings for Thompson and offer options for the midfield to get forward However, thanks to McNeil's rashness last night, we have three games coming up where a awful lot rests on Baker's shoulders. My concern is that, if we go 5 or 6 games without a win, confidence across the whole team will start to dissolve away.
