Rusk stars in Colts' away win

MIDDLETON Colts under 18s travelled to Liverpool to face Kingsley FC in a North West Counties Youth Alliance match.

Colts started brightly in atrocious conditions.

They kept the ball down and played neat, one-touch football to lessen the effect of the strong wind and driving rain.

Tom Wilson and Johnny Cummins were immense in central midfield, while Mike Rusk and Eddie Heywood worked the flanks with speed and guile.

Colts piled on the pressure and were nearly rewarded when a curling freekick from Tom Wilson was headed onto the bar by Mike Rusk.

After half an hour the same pair put Colts into the lead. A low Wilson freekick was controlled by Rusk who smashed the ball past the keeper from 10 yards.

Two minutes before half time Rusk drove in a low centre from the right and a Kingsley defender could only help the ball into his own net.

Kingsley forced Colts onto the defensive in the last 20 minutes, and they scored with five minutes left.

Deservedly, Colts held on to take the points.

Mike Rusk was named as player of the match.
