Six-goal special in only game played

9/10/2008

ONLY one game escaped the weather as the old one-two of heavy rain and waterlogged pitches took its toll on the Middleton Sunday League fixtures.

With Bowlee and Parkfield pitches all ruled unplayable, attention switched to Cardinal Langley School where Old David’s shared the points and six goals in a highly entertaining Division One encounter.

David’s were delighted to open their account for the season at the third time of asking.

Bowes, Rowe and Fitzpatrick were their goalscorers, while Ward, Lattie and Simpson replied for St Clares.

Old David’s were looking good for their first win of the season as they led 3-0 with 20 minutes left to play.

Even when Dave Simpson smashed home a volley it looked like it would be little more than a consolation.

But John Denton terrorised the home defence out wide and five minutes from time he produced a superb cross which Tommy Ward bundled home from close range.

Noel Lattie then found the back of the net to save an unlikely point for Saints.

Among the games to fall foul of the weather was Langley Celtic’s Manchester FA Sunday Amateur Shield tie with Moss Side Old House.

The Shield proudly sits in the Celtic trophy cabinet, alongside the HPS Challenge Cup.

The battle to see whose name is engraved on the cup this season begins on Sunday.

Pick of the first round ties includes the meeting at Bowlee between Langley Rangers, yet to record a win in any competition this season, and Radclyffe Arms who have won all three of their league matches in this, their 14th consecutive season in the Premier Division.

At Parkfield, Premier Division side Woodman will have to be on their toes against a Hebers’ team which is unbeaten this season and has scored 13 goals in three Division One games.

Holders Celtic sit out the first round, instead facing Dog Inn in the only Premier Division game of the day.

In Division One, Old Cock and Middleton Colts will both be hoping to open their accounts for the season.
