Dale's revenge chance

Guy Nelson
22/ 7/2008

ROCHDALE have the chance to gain a small measure of revenge when their play-off conquerors Stockport County visit Spotland tonight.

Jim Gannon's side were 3-2 victors at Wembley when the two sides met in the League Two Play-off Final in May.

Gannon will take a reduced senior squad of 16 to Rochdale with his young players facing a friendly at Woodley Sports tomorrow night.

He said: "Realistically, although we want to give the young players a chance to stake a claim, I think we already know those young players that would be involved in the first team.

"And we know we'll be strengthening, so we're really conscious about giving the higher level games to those players that have got a serious chance of being in the starting 11 at the start of the season.

"I think we're going to creep towards players getting 70, 80, 90 minutes over the next couple of weeks. That means the squad being divided with the senior players getting the senior games the junior lads playing the developing games."

While County were winning 3-2 at Cammell Laird on Saturday, Rochdale were 6-0 winners at Rossendale United in their first pre-season friendly.

Boss Keith Hill said: "Though I'm happy about scoring six goals, I'm even more pleased with the nil.''

County are improving the squad in all areas except for their goal-keeper and it is a great concern that Jim cannot bring in an experienced stopper. The signing of Carl Baker is wonderful addition to the team, and if Gleeson follows later this week it will need only a front player and the dreaded keeper to compleat a strong county line-up.
