Villa meet Celtic in Shield final

1/ 5/2008

CARDINAL Villa will face Langley Celtic in the final of this year’s Middleton Sunday League Challenge Shield.

Goals from Wes Bancroft, Lee and David Neville were enough to ease Celtic past Division One side Radclyffe on Sunday morning. Carl Brogden netted for Radclyffe.

Villa confirmed their good run of recent form with a 2-1 victory over Blackley Alliance.

It was Celtic’s second cup win of the week as, three days previously, they had beaten a determined Our Ladys side 3-1 in an HPS Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Celtic now face Red Barn in a semi-final on Sunday – Barn having received a bye following Carters Rhodes demise.

Woodman and Alliance could not be separated by extra-time in an epic clash.

With the score at 2-2 it went to penalties and Alliance just won through 4-3.

Our Lady’s and Brunswick have been hot on each other’s heels all season in the battle to get out of Division Two.

Lady’s just edged their way into the second promotion spot, and they took the honours again when the teams met in a John Matthews Cup semi-final at rain-lashed Bowlee on Sunday.

After a goal-less first-half Brunswick drew first blood with a fine goal from Colin Brown.

Our Lady’s hit back, and it took a brilliant, point-blank save from Brunswick’s Matt Williams to keep them at bay.

However, as the game wore on the home side took control of a competitive match and booked their place in the final.

In the other semi-final Inter Alliance hammered Premier Autobodies 8-1
