Wood double secures a win

ROCHDALE Ladies FC, who play home matches in Middleton, made the journey to Scunthorpe where they registered a 3-0 win on a very uneven surface.

Dale’s first attack of the game saw centre half Katie Wood pick up a loose ball and strike a long pass over Scunthorpe’s defence to where a prowling Rachael Wood beat a defender, rounded the keeper and fired home from an acute angle in the 12th minute.

Lizzie Baird saw Scunthorpe’s defence push up and hit a carbon copy ball over their defence. Again Wood ran on to it, this time lobbing the keeper.

Dale’s third goal came from a freekick, Susie Wells stepping up to fire into a top corner from 30-yard for a brilliant goal in the 39th minute.

After the break the game became a bit scrappy. Scunthorpe’s best chance came with a great strike, but Dale’s Lauren Bracewell pulled off a magnificent save.

Dale’s next game will be on Sunday 6 January, at West Auckland.

Rochdale under 12s played Burnley Girls at Hopwood Hall College and took control of the game early on, keeping the visitors’ defence under pressure.

Ainsworth opened the scoring with a left footed shot and Richardson made it 2-0 not long after.

Great battling by Burleigh in the middle of the field enabled her to pass the ball wide to Bradburn who crossed for Ainsworth to claim her second.

Hildersley netted the fourth, and Ainsworth completed her hat-trick before Burnley came back with two quick goals, Dale holding out for a  5-2 win.
