MONTON and Weaste’s second team added a second trophy to the cricket club’s cabinet on Saturday.

They lifted the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League’s Burton Cup with a two-wicket win against Littleborough to add to the first team’s Wood Cup triumph the previous month.

The youthful second string, who have finished their league season in a disappointing eighth position, dismissed Littleborough for 173 runs in the Burton Cup final on Saturday thanks largely to the brilliant bowling of Dilip Patel, who claimed five wickets for the loss of 19 runs from his 10 overs.

Monton had the odd scary moment in reply. But they eventually topped Littleborough’s total with Sean Marsh, 62 not out, and Chris Costa, 54 runs, proving to be the star turns with the bat.

Monton’s first team also recorded a two-wicket win at the weekend as they finished their Lake Garage Central Lancashire League season in fifth spot.

They bowled out second from bottom Ashton for 171 runs in the home game with Craig Duxbury taking 4-32.

Fine batting from Brendan Nash, who hit 55 runs, inspired Monton to a successful run chase. But Monton have lost too many games against teams in the bottom half of the table this season and that ultimately thwarted their hopes of a title challenge.
