Seconds fall short at Redbrook

THE second XI followed the firsts in falling to defeat by the same opponents they knocked out of the Burton Cup the previous Sunday.
With seven regulars missing, a vastly under strength side took to the field at Redbrook.
Despite this, the Moonrakers showed their pride and dismissed the home side for 96 – as they had done in the Burton Cup – on a damp and green wicket.
Skipper Gareth Hughes added to his six wickets last Sunday with five for 46 as he led his young side from the front. He was more than ably supported by Razza Hussain (two for 21), Faisal Hussain (one for 20) and George Walker (two for five) – coupled with some good fielding – as the hosts’ capitulated.
On a somewhat poor note, one which would eventually cost the Moonrakers dearly, they gave away an incredible 24 extras – a quarter of the whole total.
With the pitch deteriorating, something was needed from those who have had some prolonged senior experience. That’s what they duly got as the aggressive Sam Warren (24) and steady Martin Roberts (15) got the reply off to the best off starts. The pair had got the score to 44 before disaster struck, Roberts was bowled by Ian Gilbertson. Warren fell soon after, caught at mid-wicket and a collapse ensured. From 48 for two the visitors crumbled to 57 for seven. It was only thanks to Faisal Hussain (28 not out) that they got anywhere near their final total, but with the pitch deteriorating wickets fell regularly and the Moonrakers were all out on 88 – to agonisingly lose by eight runs.
A valiant effort considering the circumstances, and although they were defeated they did pick up a very valuable bonus point for getting 75 per cent of Rochdale’s total.
