South African all-rounder joins Moonrakers

6/ 3/2008

MIDDLETON Cricket Club officials are delighted with their second professional signing of the year.

They had signed all-rounder Justin Kreusch, but a few weeks ago he told the club he would not be able to come to Towncroft due to an injury picked up playing in South Africa this winter.

The Moonrakers were confident they could quickly find a replacement, and that replacement is Werner Coetsee who was with Northern League club Morecambe last summer and finished above Kreusch (Blackpool) in the league's averages for both bat and ball.

Coetsee’s name may sound familiar to local cricket followers. He did, in fact, play for Middleton last season when he stood in for the unavailable Arno Jacobs in a match at Unsworth.

Coetsee is a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-breaks bowler. He comes from Free State where he plays for Highveld Lions.

The 24-year-old has played in 48 first-class matches and scored 2,170 runs at an average of 29.72.

He has also taken 103 wickets at an average of 38.56.

Moonrakers’ captain John Punchard said: "We were obviously disappointed when we heard Justin Kreusch had been injured, but we had seen Coetsee before and knew of his talents."

Punchard was instrumental in the signing of Coetsee and club chairman Lenny Hayes said: "On behalf of us all I would like to thank John for his efforts in securing an excellent professional.

"After the hard work he had done in securing Justin Kreusch I know he felt suicidal when he found out Justin wouldn’t be able to come.

"Getting Werner at such short notice not only tells you of the calibre of John, but also illustrates his knowledge and the respect he gets within cricketing circles."

The club has also named its social committee for the year which is Helen Fletcher, Janine Brown, Karen Hughes, Peter Faben, John Fielden, Len Hayes, Roger Whitworth, John Porter, Ann Marie Wolstenholme and Gayle Lee.
