Academic courses which pack a punch

27/ 3/2008

THE Hopwood Hall Boxing Academy is on the lookout for new talent

The search is on for new recruits, aged 16 to 19, who would join the Academy in September.

Previous boxing experience is an advantage but is not essential, although applicants must be enthusiastic and committed to both their academic studies and training regime.

Boxing Academy manager Jimmy Barker said: "There are many young people in our area with great potential as boxers. We are encouraging them to pursue their talent and combine training with academic qualifications at our specialist sports training centre."

The Academy, opened in 2002 by Ricky Hatton, combines boxing training with a full time course, often a BTEC in Sport, or something in the construction industry.

This unique combination is exclusive to Hopwood Hall College within the North West.

The Academy has produced national champions and England internationals athletes, both male and female.

Past "students" have included former ABA senior champion Anthony Crolla, Joe Murray who recently qualified for the 2008 Olympic games, and European silver medallist Nicola Adams.

To find out more about becoming a student at the Academy contact Jimmy Barker on 0161 643 7560 ext 3250 or on 07757 051189.
