For example, Middleton Parish Church has evolved over 1200 years from a wooden Saxon Church (where the remains of St Cuthbert rested for a while) to the Norman stone church of 1120, to the "Langley" church (1412), then the rebuilding by Sir Richard Assheton in 1524 as a thanks-offering for the victory at the Battle of Flodden.
