Civil Defence gave safety advice

26/ 5/2005

AS WELL as working for the war effort in local factories, Middletonians did their bit in other ways, such as welcoming Royal Air Force personnel into the town when the RAF set up camp in the village of Bowlee. It was here No 10 Barrage Balloon Centre was based, as one of Manchester's first lines of defence.

One business which was especially pleased about the military activity was the Jolly Butcher pub, the building now occupied by Tapio's Restaurant. The pub, said to be the oldest in the village, had originally been called the Pack Horse, but when it was taken over by butcher, James Mills, in 1835, a name change was inevitable!

During the war a triangle on the corner of the building bore the legend ERP, which stood for Emergency Rendezvous Point. This was an allocated pick-up point in case of attack.

Each point had a number and in the event of an attack a lorry or coach would be allocated to go to the point and collect the public, transporting them to a safer place.
