Firework fun for all the family

A SPARKLING time was had by young and old alike as the Bowlee Park bonfire and firework display went off with a bang last Monday.

Crowds from all over town and beyond gathered to watch the Rochdale borough member of the Youth Parliament, Atifa Shah, light the bonfire.

Once the fire was burning brightly the evening's fun continued with a huge funfair and firework display, which could be seen from miles around.

Jill Welsby, youth empowerment officer for Rochdale Council, said the event was a blazing success.

She said: "As the young person's elected member of the youth parliament, they asked Atifa if she'd do it. It was quite good really because she's not a huge lover of fireworks and things herself, so it was quite daunting for her, but she was made very welcome.

"The people in charge of the bonfire also made sure she had all the right safety equipment and it was a very good experience for her."

Jill added that it was good to see people of all ages relaxing and enjoying themselves on the night, which had a real community atmosphere.

She said: "There was a great family environment and there were lots of people there, from children and little ones to grandparents. Everybody was having fun.

"The message about going to organised fireworks displays must have really got across. It was well done, well marshalled, and everybody felt very safe and comfortable.

"The funfair was huge, far bigger than others I've seen. Everybody enjoyed the occasion."
