Council queries need for disclosure

12/ 1/2006

ROCHDALE Council has criticised the BBC's decision to screen the 'satanic abuse' documentary, claiming that it could make recruiting social services staff more difficult.

It has also questioned the relevance of going back over cases that are 15 years old.

Before seeing the documentary, Terry Piggott, Rochdale Council's executive director responsible for children, schools and families, said: "The council was invited to take part in the programme some months ago but declined to do so on legal advice, taking into account the civil action for damages currently being pursued against the council by some of the children (now adults) involved in the case.

"The council has, however, provided a statement of its position to the BBC to be used as part of the programme.

"Society needs able and committed social workers to protect children and media coverage that makes the recruitment of them even more difficult than it is already should be a concern for all of us."

Yes, I couldn't agree more. Why should we, the people of Middleton be subjected to 'old news'? Of course the council is right in questioning the relevance of looking at events that happened 15 years ago. God above! If this were to become general council policy ie investigating mismanagement, shoddy practice and downright stupidity the incompetence inherent in all departments would become public knowledge. Where would that leave us eh? Bankrupt, thats where. For goodness sake, lets stop whingeing and look at the positives...We have a beautiful new bus station, no doubt constructed to help to bus in more assylum seekers and refugees. A proposed leisure centre for them to swim and cavort in and more and more kebab shop in which they can gain employment whilst claiming free housing and benefits. So, alls not bad then, Rochdale council does have a heart! Seriously though, what a bloody disgrace. Those involved in this case should hang there heads in shame, do the decent thing and resign. Lets hope these families get the justice they truly deserve. Well done to the BBC and the Mid Guardian for exposing this tragedy.
