PRELIMINARY building works have started on Middleton Shopping Centre's expansion - and three new shops have already been confirmed.

The long-awaited 45,000sq ft extension, which will cost a staggering £9million, is set to be completed in summer 2006.

And stores who have already confirmed plans to open in the new extension are fashion retailer Peacocks, sportswear retailer Streetwise Sports and current tenant Home Bargains.

In addition, Wilkinsons is expanding threefold within the centre, and is set to trade over two floors at a total space of 33,000 sq ft.

This will be national retailer Peacocks' first outlet in Middleton, and the 7,000sq ft ground floor store will showcase a wide range of clothing, footwear and homewares.

A spokesperson for the company said: "The opportunity to have an outlet at the Middleton Shopping Centre is very much in line with our plans to expand across the UK this year, and we believe that we have a great product and retail offer for the Middleton shopper."

Streetwise Sports, one of the fastest growing sportswear retailers in the north of England, will occupy a first floor 10,000 sq ft store, while existing store Home Bargains will significantly expand as it takes a new 10,600sq ft store on the ground floor.

Michael Stevens, operations director at Warner Estate Holdings PLC, which manages Middleton Shopping Centre on behalf of Agora Shopping Centres, said: "We are delighted to be able to introduce brand new national retailers through the extension, strengthening the future of Middleton.

"The modernisation of the centre is commencing with new escalators and a new entrance fronting onto the transport exchange, for a bright and contemporary shopping experience.

"With the addition of popular fashion store Peacocks and branded sportswear store Streetwise Sports, we will be in an even better position to compete with towns like Bury and Rochdale.

"We remain committed to providing existing retailers, such as Home Bargains, Wilkinson and Mark One, with larger stores to serve their ever growing needs in Middleton."

It's nice to read of all the new fancy shops that are to open in the new fancy shopping centre, but when I look at how much it is going to cost I can't help thinking that for a fraction of that money we could put Middleton back to the way it was be for some bright spark decided to "improve it".
