Local show stoppers are cream of the crop

MIDDLETON Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society has won three awards in a ceremony to promote the arts.

The group won the most awards of the evening for its performance of The Wizard of Oz in April of this year.

The musical society, which has operated in Middleton for the past 80 years, won awards for Best Musical, Best Choreography and Best Actor at the ceremony held at the Longfield Suite in Prestwich.

Musical and operatic societies from all over Greater Manchester attended the special evening to honour the people who bring music and dance to the regions.

One member of the society and director of the Wizard of Oz show, Mark Rosenthal, said: "It was a really good evening. There was an orchestra on stage and everything. It was really well done.

"We did the best out of all the other societies so we are very proud of that.

"I've been with the society for 15 years and I love every minute."

The society is putting on a pantomime for the Christmas season in January 2006 and then in April it will be performing its own version of The Full Monty, which is expected to be better than ever following this years' success.
