Remembering Roy

WORK began on one of Blackley's newest green spaces this week, under the watchful eye of the man who helped make it happen.

John Biggs, manager of the Whitemoss Club decided to bid for funding estimated at around £10,000 to improve the local environment, which he says will benefit the whole community.

And the finished project will include a sensory garden, currently being installed at the side of the centre on Whitemoss Road.

Inspired by one of the area's most renowned community activists, the late Roy Williams, John says the garden will serve to be a lasting memory of his work.

He explained: "We decided to try and get some funding in order to build a sensory garden, which will consist of a number of different areas where people can relax and enjoy the peaceful and tranquil surroudings.

"Roy was a much loved character who motivated so many people in the local community to get involved in their neighbourhood, and for that reason we are going to dedicate the garden to him."

The garden will feature special plant species designed to allow people to appreciate their texture and smell as well as their aesthetic value.

The majority of the money for the development was obtained from Manchester charity, the Community Foundation, as well as a cash grant worth £2,000 from Manchester City Council.

John added that without it the project would have been impossible.

He said: "We've been really lucky to get the grants, and hopefully when the work is finished it will be well worth the effort."

The garden is scheduled for completion by the end of May.
