Tea brews cash for local hospice

STAFF and customers at a Middleton supermarket took Tea at 3 last week, to raise much needed funds for a local hospice.

The Tesco tea drinkers were joined in their efforts by local personality and patron of Springhill Hospice, Norman Prince - ex-lead singer with the Houghton Weavers, now a GMR DJ.

Brews and buns were doled out by staff at the store for donations. They had also contributed themselves by paying manager Tina Perry to make it a non-uniform day at work.

Actress and celebrity cook Jane Asher supported the event too, creating a special "tea cake" made with Tetley tea. Other big brand names helped by donating cash from items sold at the store.

Tea at 3 was part of the Hospice Care Campaign, which runs over the month raising funds for hospices throughout the UK. Springhilll hopes to raise £1.2M to fund a variety of projects such as the building of a new facility for patients' relatives. This is over and above the £1.8M running costs of the place generally.

Hospice fund-raiser Ken Davies, said: "We'd very much like to thank Tina and all the staff at Tesco, along with Norman, for a fantastic afternoon. We all had a lot of fun and although we have yet to tot up the total, it seems to have been a very worthwhile event."
