Toppled by winds of 89mph

DISASTER was narrowly avoided in Rhodes on Saturday, when a 70-year-old whitebeam tree fell victim to the high winds, crashing to the ground.

The tree, which stood at the top end of Kelvin Avenue, was about two-and-a-half feet in diameter and at least 40ft high.

Arboriculturalists say when the tree fell across the road, it clipped a car, and a cat was temporarily trapped under its branches. But apart from that, no serious damage occurred.

Walter Clarke, resident, and chairman of the tenants' and residents' association, was just leaving Rhodes Community Centre, in Kelvin Avenue, when the tree was blown down.

He said: "It was lucky there was no-one walking past, or sitting in their car at the traffic lights, otherwise it could have had tragic consequences."

A Rochdale Council spokesman said that over the weekend there were 28 calls regarding storm-damaged trees and recorded wind speeds reached 89 mph.
