Student quids-in with Guardian English award

STUDENT Dominic Pollard is £50 better-off for Christmas after winning an award for English from the Guardian in memory of a former distinguished Editor.
Dominic, studying for A-levels in the Lower Sixth Form at Cardinal Langley RC High School, was nominated for the 2003 Alex Holt Memorial Award, for excellence in English, by members of the English Department at the school.
Presenting the award, Guardian Editor Gerry Sammon said: "Dominic was clearly this year's most deserving candidate for the Alex Holt Memorial Award, established two years ago in the name of a much-loved and respected former Guardian editor who was renowned for his powerful and accurate use of English.
"I would like to thank Alex's widow, Ella, for setting up this award, which gives students who have excelled in Engish a further incentive to do even better."
Assistant headteacher, Mr Kevin O'Brien, said: "Dominic was nominated for his work last year for his mastery of the English language written in the journalistic style."
