No joy on this ride

A GROUP of youngsters from Moston were given the chance to view the chilling after effects of a car smash last week.
The mock traffic accident was arranged by officers at Blackley Fire Station on Rochdale Road, and the hard-hitting exercise was aimed at teaching youths the often tragic consequences of joy riding and car crime.
Station Officer Gordon Stubbs said: "We have an awful problem with both car theft and car crime in North Manchester. This shock tactic is a way of hopefully teaching youths the full implication of car crime and what can happen."
On arriving at the station last Thursday (28), the group of nearly 20 youths, all aged about 16, watched graphic videos of traffic accidents and how the fire crews go about cutting unfortunate victims from the wreckage.
The fire crew then set up a scrap car with four volunteers inside, all with fake injuries and covered with stage blood, so the youngsters could get a first hand look at how the crews have to operate.
Officer Stubbs added: "The fake injuries included broken bones and such like, and we made the passengers wait the full five minutes it can take for a fire engine to reach the scene of an accident, so they had some idea of how long people must wait before help arrives."
