'Blueprint' for town goes under microscope

IMPROVING transport accessibility to Middleton will increase the viability of the town according to a new master planning blueprint being drawn up by Rochdale Council - and that could include a new rail station and the elimination of the town centre subway.
The first draft 2002 replacement plan for the borough's Unitary Development Plan will be considered by Middleton Township Committee tomorrow (Thursday) before going out to public consultation.
It supports the development of a new rail station at Slattocks, which would serve the Stakehill estate and also Hopwood Hall College. It's suggested that this could be linked to a park-and-ride facility and a bus interchange.
It also calls for improvements to the town's existing station at Mills Hill, including improved shelters and a booking office. There could also be rail freight links to the industrial area around Mills Hill and Stakehill.
As part of the strategic highway network it also suggests improvements to the Assheton Way/Oldham Road/Middleton Way route through the town centre. It says: "There is the potential to improve pedestrian accessibility by reducing the width of the roads and providing surface level pedestrian crossing in place of existing subways."
On another contentious issue, car parking, it says Middleton suffers from piecemeal parking provision, but should benefit from the rationalisation of car parking provision as part of the major redevelopment of the town centre.
