Park-and-ride to the Games

19/ 2/2002

THERE was good news this week for sporting enthusiasts planning to visit the Commonwealth Games as transport chiefs unveiled the transport strategy they hope will encourage spectators to leave their cars behind and make their trip by public transport.

It includes a 2,000 vehicle park and ride site at Heaton Park. From Heaton Park, Metrolink will provide a link to the city centre from where First Manchester will be providing a bus link to Sportcity venues.

A number of park and walk sites have been identified in Manchester city centre and East Manchester. The three sites in East Manchester are less than a miles walking distance from Sportcity and have combined provision for 6,000 spaces.

A meeting of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority learned that the county's transport strategy for the Games, which are being held between 25 July and 4 August, is ready to make the transition from the drawing board and hit the streets of Greater Manchester.

Councillor Roger Jones, chairman, said: "The Commonwealth Games are going to be the biggest sports event ever held in the UK so a tremendous amount of hard work has been put into devising a robust transport strategy. We want to make sure that public transport is the most convenient option for people to get to sporting venues around Greater Manchester during the Games and I am confident that the strategy will achieve that end.

"We have now confirmed a dedicated high frequency shuttle bus service between key Manchester city centre sites and the City of Manchester Stadium at Sportcity. In addition, enhanced public transport will be in place for other sporting facilities throughout Greater Manchester and services will be running well into the late evening. In order to encourage people to leave their cars behind and to avoid a build up of congestion on the local road network we will be providing high quality park and ride facilities."
