Digging in to beat neglect and vandals

18/ 2/2002

IMPROVEMENT work costing £11,500 has begun on a piece of woodland once blighted by neglect and vandalism.

When the diggers and volunteers have moved out it is hoped more people will be attracted to visit Bailey's Wood, Blackley.

Crosslee Tenants and Residents' Association (CTRA) is using the funds, which were granted by Manchester City Council and Shell, to redesign and rebuild footpaths stretching the length of the wood.

Charlestown ward Councillor Mark Hackett braved wet and windy weather to get work underway.

Phil Heaps, project co-ordinator said: "I am delighted work has finally begun.

"The work we are doing here will mean the wood is accessible to all."

He added the project should be completed by March.

CTRA begun work on the woods six years ago after they fell into disrepair and since then they have improved the area beyond recognition, with more developments in the pipeline.
