Jolly hockey sticks? Not on your life ...

11/ 2/2002

THERE was a time when school hockey used to be the preserve of the pristine fields at Cheltenham Ladies College or the green acres at Haberdashers or Merchant Taylors schools ... not any more.

The game is now being promoted in 16 Rochdale schools, thanks to a roadshow funded by an Awards for All lottery grant.

Pupils at Heybrook Primary were one of the first to see what hockey is all about when officials from North Manchester Roller Hockey League and Manchester Storm took the roadshow to their school.

The show was hosted by Nick Crawley, an ex-Storm player, now with the Altrincham Aces. Working with him was Storm mascot, Lightning Jack, who encouraged the children to join the party atmosphere and support class-mates in a race to don a full ice hockey hit.

The show was able to putting across the message of maintaining an active lifestyle supported by health eating.

Video footage dealing various aspects of the game, interspersed with question and answer sessions and sing-along intervals held the attention of the youngsters throughout the show.
