Born fighter is a real inspiration

AN INSPIRATIONAL teenager who overcame a life-threatening disease at birth has won an endeavour award at school.

Will Boyle was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder known as DiGeorge Syndrome when he was born.

He had curvature of the spine and his parent's thought they would lose their baby boy after he had to endure open heart surgery twice.

But Will, of Hazelhurst Drive, Hollin, fought back and now the 13-year-old has just received an award for Endeavour in School in the Face of Adversity.

His proud mum, Julie Kendal, said: "We were so worried we were going to lose him when he was a baby, and look at him now.

"You wouldn't believe the number of times he has been in and out of hospital. We are so lucky to have him."

She added: "Will has come on so far. I just hope that his story will be an inspiration to other children and parents suffering from similar experiences."

Ms Kendal also had glowing praise for Will's school, St Joseph's High in Heywood.

"The school have been absolutely wonderful," she said.

"They have adapted to Will's disorder in all its stages.

"They have done themselves proud."

Teachers at St Joseph's have been equally impressed with Will's attitude.

He was not meant to return to school until September, when he will enter Year nine, but was so determined to continue his studies that he returned for the end of the summer term. The school gave him the endeavour award in recognition of this dedication.

Brendan Coyle, acting deputy-headteacher at the school, said: "We chose Will because he is such an unbelievable boy.

"We cannot believe the progress he's made. He keeps up with his fellow students despite the time he's missed.

"He really is a joy to have at the school. He gets involved in everything."

Will is a keen drummer, his favourite subject at school being music. But, following his most recent spinal fusion operation at Pendlebury Hospital, he is now able to take part in PE lessons with his classmates as well.

Will said: "I'm glad I can do some exercise now. I really like PE."

He added: "I think I'd like to join the army when I'm 18.

"But I might go to university. I know its important to get good qualifications so you can get a good job."
