Drowning tragedy - man cleared

A MAN originally arrested after a 20-year-old Blackley woman drowned in the sea at Blackpool over the Bank Holiday weekend has now been cleared of any criminal involvement.
At around, 2.30am on Sunday 24 August, police received a report that a man and a woman were in the sea near to the Cenotaph at Blackpool. The coastguard was notified and turned out.
Police officers managed to recover a man from the water and he was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital by paramedics.
Following a search by all the emergency services, a woman was seen in the sea a short while later and was recovered by the coastguard. Clare Burns was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.
DCI Neil Esseen, leading the investigation said: “The incident was originally treated as suspicious following a number of reports from witnesses. However, having spoken to the male and concluded a number of other enquiries, a clearer picture has emerged and the matter is no longer being treated as a criminal inquiry.
An inquest will be held in the future by the coroner, who has been informed of the developments. The family of Clare Burns have also been informed and have requested time to come to terms with their devastating loss.”
The male involved, believed to be Clare’s boyfriend, has had his bail cancelled and will not face any further police action.
