300 homes plan for Booth Hall site

PLANS to build 300 family homes on the site of Booth Hall Children's Hospital have been submitted to Manchester City Council.

Outline planning permission is being sought for the huge development - which would comprise of 270 houses and 30 apartments if given the green light.

The children's hospital, on Charlestown Road, is set to close its doors next year with services being transferred to to the new 'super' hospital in Manchester city centre.

But the planning application, made on behalf of Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s Hospital NHS Trust, means the site may soon be home to hundreds of families.

A report by Taylor Young, acting as agents for the applicant, said the development will provide: "Aspirational family housing in the form of large detached and semi-detached homes, townhouses and apartments in a safe, attractive and well-landscaped environment."

Under the plans most of the hospital, which was opened in 1908 and designated as a children's hospital in 1915, will be demolished but key buildings are set to be retained. These include the Administrative Building, which is said to be of "townscape value", along with the Lodge House and the boundary walls.

The main administrative building is set to be converted into apartments and will form the heart of the proposed development.

The report added: "The original gatehouse is also to be retained to maintain the views into the site, together with the grouping containing the central Administrative Building, to create a prestigious development, which reflects the historic character of the original hospital complex."

A site notice and advertisement about the plans have been posted. A decision on the proposal is set to take place towards the end of September.

If anyone finds a set of tonsils when the hospital gets knocked down, they belong to me. Ihad them taken out in 1968 and never got them back.
