Peak performance raises cancer cash

15/ 5/2008

WAREHOUSE staff have stepped up to their challenge to raise £15,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care by completing the Peak District Walk.

Workers at the Wincanton-run Tesco depot on Stakehill industrial park are supporting the supermarket's charity of the year partnership and aiming to raise vital funds for Marie Curie Nursing by taking part in a variety of fundraising events throughout 2008.

The charity is aiming to raise £2.5M from the partnership to fund an additional 125,000 hours of nursing care for terminally ill patients and their families in Middleton and throughout the UK.

The Peak District walk, one of several walks the cancer care charity is holding this year, saw walkers brave the cold and rain on the 10 mile climb along the magnificent Iron Age settlement of Man Tor – and all to raise funds for local cancer care.

Fellow Tesco fundraisers at the depot also took part in the charity’s Swimathon event earlier this month.

Janine Lord, Tesco HR Officer at the depot, said "I’m enjoying being a charity champion alongside my normal job, it involves giving up a lot of my spare time, but I am dedicated to hitting and exceeding our depot target of £15,000.

"I have lost two grandparents to cancer, both on my mother’s side and I fear that my mum is at high risk because of this, so this charity is close to my heart."

Local Marie Curie Cancer Care fundraiser Hannah Taylor said "We’re so grateful to Janine and everyone at Tesco for supporting us by taking part in this event.

"The money raised will make such a difference to local people affected by cancer. If you’d like to follow in Janine and the teams’ footsteps then why not join us on another of our lovely walks – we are ‘Crossing’ the Bay in Morecambe on 14 June and walking through the stunning Lyme Park on 8 June."
