Hands off Hollin

PLANS to expel Hollin from Middleton have moved a step closer.

An amendment to a motion was passed at last night’s (Wednesday) full annual meeting of Rochdale Council calling for a review ‘at the earliest opportunity’ of the representation of the Hopwood Hall ward that covers Hollin.

At present the three ward councillors serve on both Middleton and Heywood Townships. But the review could suggest Hollin, and its 2,500 residents are served solely at the Heywood Township – effectively barring the estate’s people from being represented in Middleton.

In a heated council chamber the amended motion, put forward by Lib Dem council leader Alan Taylor, was passed by 40 votes to 19, with one abstention.

All three Hopwood Hall councillors voted against the motion, as did Labour councillors currently serving Middleton north, east, west and south wards. But the two Conservative councillors holding two seats in south Middleton did not oppose the plan out right.

Speaking at the meeting, Middleton Township Chairman Peter Williams said: “I’m sure Cllr Alan Taylor knows he will be upsetting 2,500 residents in Hollin. It is an area that clearly identifies with Middleton and if you consider moving Hollin to Heywood Township for political representation that would be disastrous.

“At the last Township meeting we had some issues of a play area and 30 young people turned up to the meeting – would that many go to Heywood?”

He added: “Hollin residents feel part of Middleton.”

Rochdale Conservative Party leader Ashley Dearnley has suggested an amendment to Cllr Taylor’s amended motion to take the proposal to the townships, but it was rejected. Rochdale Labour Party leader, Cllr Colin Lambert also called for a full public consultation on the plans.

But the Lib Dems rejected both suggestions and the amended motion that could spell the end of Hollin being represented in Middleton was passed.

What on earth is the council thinking about? Just keep your hands off Hollin! Instead, do something useful: unite Rochdale and its Liberal councillors with Oldham and leave Middleton to run its own affairs as it used to do so successfully prior to 1974.
