IT MAY have been slightly overcast, but that didn't stop Middleton's residents turning out in force for the annual May Day celebrations.

St Leonard's Square was once again the setting for the day's activities as youngsters from across town showed off their dancing skills while proud parents looked on.

The event kicked off at noon with the mysterious green man, magic sprites and Sir Ralph Assheton on his black horse arriving at Jubilee Park accompanied by the Northenden Pipe Band. Children from various schools then joined the procession up to St Leonard's Square where the festivities began.

The traditional dance of spring was enacted to welcome the season into Middleton before numerous groups showcased their talents over the course of the fun-packed day.

Young entertainers from various schools and groups including St Gabriel's Primary, Parkfield Primary, Little Heaton, St Anne's Academy, St Michael's C of E Primary and the Glenda Ann School of Dancing each took turns in dazzling the audience with a variety of maypole dancing and country dancing. There was also a special High School Musical inspired set with youngsters dressed up as characters from the Disney show.

The lack of sunshine didn't put a dampener on anyone’s spirits as hundreds of townsfolk enjoyed the afternoon's activities and dancing. There were also numerous stalls and games, including a coconut shy, fun fair and a barbecue.

The event was organised by Middleton Round Table and funded by Rochdale Council as well as the residents of Middleton.

A number of Middleton's councillors, MP Jim Dobbin, Mayor Peter Evans and his wife and Mayoress, Helen, were also in attendance.

One proud parent said: "It’s a great event. We look forward to it every year. And it's been brilliant that the weather has been better than usual."
