'Pay £32,000 or face more time in jail'
Laura Kenny20/ 3/2008
A BARE-KNUCKLE boxer who flaunted his ill-gotten gains has been ordered to pay back more than £32,000.
Unemployed John Joyce was jailed for 17 months in January after detectives discovered he had deposited around £80,000 in different bank accounts – despite claiming benefits.
Judge Robert Warnock, gave Joyce six months to come up with the cash or face a further 18 months behind bars at a proceeds of crime hearing on 14 March.
The former boxing coach on Langley, who enjoyed a lavish lifestyle buying convertible cars, jewellery and designer labels, admitted six counts of money laundering in January and claimed he had made the cash through bare knuckle brawls, benefit fraud, tax evasion and illegally dealing cars.
Jonathan Dickinson, prosecuting, said Joyce had benefited by more than £119,000 from his criminal exploits.
He said a £32,131 confiscation order had been agreed based on a £21,131 receivable amount and £11,000 in tainted gifts.
Joyce’s girlfriend Stephanie Taylor, of Thirlmere Drive in Langley, was also stripped of a convertible car given to her as a present by Joyce.
The Peugeot 307 convertible - valued at £9,000 - will now be sold by Greater Manchester Police and the proceeds used to fight crime.
Ms Taylor received a 12-month conditional discharge in January after admitting receiving the car as a gift. Joyce, formerly of Martindale Crescent, Langley, had also deposited cash in bank accounts in both his own and his girlfriend’s name.
Mr Dickinson said: "As far as Miss Taylor is concerned, because her involvment was significantly less than that of her partner, the prosecution has taken the view it is unnecessary to make any order under the legislation as she had agreed to disclaim her interest in the Peugeot motor car."
