Lecturer died after collision

15/ 3/2008

A POPULAR college lecturer died after he was in collision with a lorry on his way home from a evening with friends.

Paul Jones, a father-of-one and Hopwood Hall performing arts lecturer, died as he crossed Bolton Road, Marland, on 20 June.

An inquest at Rochdale Coroner’s Court on Wednesday heard that the 38-year-old was returning home with his student Miles Lackner-Smith when he was struck by the Volvo vehicle just before 11.30pm.

No blame was attached to the driver, Stephen Lee, who stopped at the scene.

He administered first aid, but Mr Jones sustained serious head injuries and died three days later at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Earlier in the day, Mr Jones had been socialising with friends at the college and the Cemetery pub.

The coroner Simon Nelson recorded a verdict of misadventure, saying he believed that Mr Jones set off to cross the road with Mr Lackner-Smith but changed his mind and stepped backwards, resulting in the accident.

He said: "He (Mr Jones) would not have appreciated the consequences of his actions.

"He (Mr Jones) quite simply panicked and didn’t know what to do. I don’t believe that Mr Lee’s actions were inappropriate.

"It’s clear from the numbers of people at his funeral and present here today that he was loved and respected.

"He was a gentleman and appreciated by all those who knew him."

Speaking after the inquest, his mother Susan Hanson spoke fondly of her ‘perfect son’.

She said that he would be missed by all his family, including his dad Frank Jones.

She said: "He was fantastic and very fun-loving.

"He was the best son in the world and a great dad to his 11-year-old daughter Amy. He loved her so much.

"He was very unique and a wonderful person. We will always miss him."

Flowers and football memorabilia were also left at the scene of the accident and outside his home.
