Your guide to the city that doesn't do things by halves
by Paul R Taylor12/ 4/2007
Millennium Quarter
The development of this quarter has been a critical component in
the rebuilding of the city centre. The refurbishment of the Corn
Exchange as the Triangle, the development of Exchange Square, the
Printworks, Urbis and Cathedral Gardens have combined to create a
magnificent new landscaped public space.
Northern Quarter
A regeneration priority for more than a decade, the area has a rich
architectural heritage but comparatively low rents have allowed it
to become a centre for creative industries and alternative
culture.
Spinningfields
This is one of the largest regeneration initiatives in the region,
encompassing nine hectares of prime development land between
Deansgate and the River Irwell. As well as the law courts, various
new offices - including the new MEN Media building - and the
renovated John Rylands Library, new shops and public spaces are
currently under construction.
Castlefield
Castlefield has been transformed from a derelict area into one of
the country's most celebrated regeneration success stories. Forming
Britain's first Urban Heritage Park, the area is now a tourist
destination of national significance with its historic transport
networks based around railways, canals and the remaining sections
of a Roman fort.
The Village
The Gay Village has evolved over the last two decades to become a
significant destination in its own right, successfully contributing
to the vibrancy and dynamism of the city centre, especially in the
evenings and for Pride.
Chinatown
The development of Chinatown over the last 30 years has created a
wealth of small businesses, restaurants, licensed premises, shops
and houses.
Retail Core
Includes Market Street, King Street, St Ann's Square and part of
Deansgate and is home to the majority of high street chain
stores.
Central Business Core
Home to the largest concentration of financial and professional
services in the UK outside London, it is defined by Cross Street,
Princess Street, Mosley Street and land to the rear of Market
Street. The core is the driving force behind the city's economy and
renaissance.
Peter's Fields/ The Conference Quarter
Includes the G-Mex (Manchester Central), the Manchester
International Convention Centre, Bridgewater Hall and Great
Northern, together with major hotel and office developments.
Southern Quarter/Gateway
This area lies to the south of the core of the city centre,
including parts of Oxford Road and the land towards Chester Road.
It will include the new Central Spine development.
Oxford Road Campus/Higher Education
Precinct
Manchester University campus is currently undergoing a huge
redevelopment, with landscaping and nine new buildings. It also
includes Manchester Metropolitan University.
Left Bank
The area lies next to Spinningfields and Castlefield, bounded by
the River Irwell and is the current home of Granada
Television.
Piccadilly Gateway
Often forms the first impression of the city for visitors. In
recent years the station has been remodelled, Piccadilly Gardens
have been redeveloped and the Piccadilly Canal Basin and Piccadilly
Triangle have been the focus of regeneration.
Eastern Gateway
The other side of Piccadilly Station, the area is currently
characterised by a mix of light industrial uses, commercial and
office space and a small number of textile-related wholesalers.
