Southern spirit at Cleo's border bar

WHEN Cleo Farman opened Odder bar on Oxford Road a few months ago, she welcomed her guests to "the Southern Quarter".

Odder is the 36-year-old managing director's second licensed premises in the city - she also runs the popular Odd bar, on Thomas Street, in the Northern Quarter, which opened two years ago.

Odder is officially on the border between the Southern Gateway and the Oxford Road Campus/Higher Education Precinct but Cleo's Southern Quarter name is catching on.

"I was being a bit of a cheeky monkey with that," she says. "Odd Bar is in the Northern Quarter, so I thought I'd label the area around Oxford Road the Southern Quarter. Why not?

"I think it's fab for Manchester and even though it already has millions of quarters I'd like to see some of the old ones return - especially the Italian Quarter around Ancoats.

"The Northern Quarter's great as an area, very bohemian, creative and a conservation area with lovely buildings. The areas of Manchester do have their own characters, so defining them in this way is great.

"I'm not to sure about housing developments naming themselves quarters, such as the Green Quarter and Linen Quarter but otherwise I'm all for it."

Cleo, who is originally from London but studied for her degree in Manchester, now plans to open "Oddest" bar, in another of the city's quarters.
