City is host to world art
by Laura Shannon23/ 2/2007
ARTISTS from around the world have allowed Manchester to be
their home away from home, many ending up here on a permanent
basis.
The city has evolved into a hub of contemporary art and fresh
accessible galleries have made Manchester an obvious choice for a
wealth of international talent.
Coming together next week are Argentinian-born artist Rosana
Ibarrola and Canadian artist Stefan Fiedorowicz in an exhibition
that fuses their work under the title What Eyes Cannot See, at
Manchester's Portico Library and Gallery.
Rosana had work exhibited in The Stockport Gallery in 2003 and has
had paintings on display at the Wendy Levy Art Gallery, in
Didsbury, for the past three years.
Life sessions and professional models provide the foundations for
Rosana's work. She said: "My work is entirely figurative.
"I concentrate on the female figure and my aim is to portray beauty
and emotions. I am fascinated by the human figure."
It wasn't until around five years ago that Rosana made art her
full-time career.
Even though she has painted all her life, Rosana comes from a
background of working in graphic design.
She said: "To survive as an artist is more difficult.
"I was concerned I might starve to death but I lost interest in my
job and I wasn't having fun doing advertising. I became a mum and
the decision was made for me."
Rosana has lived in Manchester for 10 years but for Stefan the
exhibition will be his anticipated return after moving to
Vienna.
What Eyes Cannot See is a complementary collection of the artists'
paintings and will demonstrate Stefan's dedication to abstract art
with colour and vibrancy.
Stefan studied history of art at university and soon found his
ability to create it - not just study it.
He became a serious painter seven years ago after leaving work in
the public service.
The idea to bring the artist's work together in a joint exhibition
belongs to the gallery's exhibitions organiser, Charlotte Wand, in
unison with the gallery's committee.
Charlotte said: "Their work is so different but the colours
complement each other so well.
"We wanted something like this, works that are entirely different
but could be matched together."
What Eyes Cannot See is on from next Friday (March 2) and the
exhibition will continue until Thursday, March 29.
The gallery, in Mosley Street, is open from Monday to Friday
between 9.30am and 4.30pm and admission to the exhibition is
free.
