Preview: Amy Winehouse
by Elizabeth Kerfoot23/ 2/2007
FRESH from picking up the Best British Female Brit Award on
Valentine's Day, party girl Amy Winehouse sways on to Manchester's
Academy's main stage on Sunday.
After cutting her teeth at copious smoky live gigs and festivals,
Winehouse took the UK by storm in 2003 with her throaty, jazz
vocals and gritty lyrics, scooping an Ivor Novello award for her
debut single and a Mercury Music Prize nomination for her
platinum-selling debut album, Frank.
For her second album, Back To Black, released last October and
already triple-platinum, Winehouse joined forces with New York's
wunderkind DJ-producer Mark Ronson.
Despite the whole album being written in just six months, and
Winehouse spending less than three weeks recording it, Back To
Black has received almost universal praise.
The album marks a shift in Winehouse's focus - she's channelling
the powerful sounds of Fifties and Sixties girl groups with
trademark autobiographical honesty.
Her mantra is: "If I haven't done it, I just can't put it into a
song."
Indeed, blockbuster single Rehab recounts the tale of Winehouse
splitting with her management company, who suggested a stint in a
rehabilitation centre following a particularly relentless stint of
revelry and some rather dramatic weight loss.
Winehouse famously shrieked "No, no, no!" and sacked them.
Other highlights are sure to include You Know I'm No Good, the
outrageous Me And Mr Jones and the album's title track, Back To
Black.
