Preview: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
by Elizabeth Kerfoot16/ 2/2007
FOR a show that started life as a London primary school's play
nearly 40 years ago, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
has come a long way.
An early collaboration of thespian wunderkinds Tim Rice and Andrew
Lloyd Webber, the production became a regular fixture on both West
End and international stages, featuring stars like Donny Osmond,
Joan Collins, Richard Attenborough, Jason Donovan and Philip
Schofield.
The latest incarnation, hitting Manchester's Opera House from
Monday, is Bill Kenwright's widely-acclaimed arrangement.
It was to be fronted by Celebrity Big Brother's Ian "H" Watkins as
Joseph, although he pulled out, blaming other commitments.
The show re-tells the Biblical tale of a father's favourite son, a
boy who can interpret dreams. Joseph's brothers become insatiably
jealous and sell Joseph into slavery.
But the pharaoh hears of Joseph's knack with dreams and pronounces
him Egypt's advisor. Years later, Joseph's starving brothers beg
for help from a man they don't recognise as their brother. Joseph
takes pity on them and reunites the family.
With songs we all know and love and an all-child support choir,
Joseph is perfect for the young and young at heart.
