Preview: The Killers

WE British love flattery, so it's no wonder that we took to The
Killers with such open arms when they first arrived on these shores
three years ago.
Hailing from Las Vegas, the guitar four-piece sounded like a
walking homage to all the great British rock bands - a splash of
New Order's electronics, a dash of Oasis' anthemics and all topped
off with The Smiths' yearning romance.
Meanwhile, the band's singer, Brandon Flowers, fancied himself as
something of an enigmatic, sexually ambiguous English mouthpiece,
like a hybrid of Morrissey and David Bowie but with Liam
Gallagher's sense of rock star pugilism.
Naturally, Britain made them superstars, granting them number one
albums and sell-out tours. But ever since then, The Killers have
been trying to win over their home nation with varying degrees of
success.
Recently released second album Sam's Town was their deliberate
attempt to conquer their home country. It is a Springsteen-style
rock epic which pays tribute to America's big highways and blue
collar towns.
However, American music magazines like Rolling Stone savaged the
album, calling it contrived and calculated.
It's no wonder, then that after their amazingly received gig at the
Apollo last November The Killers were in such a hurry to come back
to England, starting with this mammoth show.
Flattery works both ways and if their home nation is proving
resistant to their charms, then Britain will gladly adopt The
Killers as its own.
The Killers play the MEN Arena tomorrow (Saturday).
