AN award-winning production of the play Lifeboat comes to The Lowry before heading to the bright lights of Broadway. The Catherine Wheels Theatre Company's production of Nicola McCartney's story of survival, courage and friendship will be staged in the intimate Studio Theatre.

Lifeboat tells the true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings, two girls who set sail for Canada from Liverpool in September, 1940, on board The City Of Benares.

The 15-year-olds were among 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war-torn Britain.

Four days into the voyage, however, their ship was torpedoed and sank. Only 11 of the evacuees survived and Bess and Beth spent 19 terrifying hours on an upturned lifeboat.

They willed each other to survive and remain firm friends more than 60 years later.

Directed by Gill Robertson, Lifeboat is at The Lowry between Tuesday and next Friday (February 9). Tickets are £8. Call the box office on 0870 7875793 or visit www.thelowry.com
