PREVIEW: Pharrell Williams
by David Sue8/12/2006
BACK in 2004, a survey of British radio apparently found that
more than 20 per cent of the tracks played were produced by
Pharrell Williams.
A telling statistic that's only the tip of the iceberg when it
comes to discussing Pharrell Williams' ubiquity and seismic power
in the music world.
Three years ago, if you'd been told Williams could walk on water,
you'd probably have believed it to be true.
As one half of production outfit The Neptunes, he provided cool,
clipped beats and staggering success for the likes of Britney
Spears, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Snoop Dog.
He is also the frontman of N*E*R*D, the hugely successful
experimental funk/soul/rock troupe. And he's gone solo.
Last year's debut solo effort, In My Mind, saw him cement his bid
for immortality, a masterclass in R&B/hip hop from a man who
basically set the bar for modern music and now he's raising it
again.
Also branching out into his fashion clothing line, the man would
probably be running for the American presidency if he wasn't too
busy blowing our ears and minds.
Pharrell Williams plays the Apollo on Thursday.
