PREVIEW: Placebo
by David Sue8/12/2006
PLACEBO spent most of the Nineties being maligned as naff,
posing Goth outsiders, so how did they end up headlining the MEN
Arena 10 years on?
Well, the answer is somewhere in that question. Placebo frontman
Brian Molko's androgynous posturing and Gothic black eyeliner chic
were always a bit too incongruous, too gender-bending for laddish
Brit pop.
But now that Goth outsider culture is back in vogue, everywhere
from Top Shop to Russell Brand, thus making Placebo something of
elder statesmen to their scene.
None of this would matter a jot if Placebo (pictured) weren't still
making good music - and they are.
Latest album Meds has been met with widespread critical acclaim and
the band have musically moved on without compromising the emotional
territory Placebo have always excelled in - that of gloomy,
never-ending adolescence.
Goths don't go away - they just come back wiser and feeling
mightily vindicated.
Placebo are at the MEN Arena on Sunday.
